Shakespeare and Dante Response
Reading this article made it very clear to me that although there were arguments that Shakespeare did know of Dante's works, he truly did not. Shakespeare was not familiar with the Italian language in which Dante wrote. Dante's works were written in Italian, and although Shakespeare knew little about the language, he didn't know enough to truly understand the stories. Lastly, I agree with the article in saying that if Shakespeare really did know Dante and his work, he would have used it many times throughout his works. So therefore the similar use of descriptions to hell were simply coincidental.
