"Reading Hamlet" Annotated Bibliography

Downing, Crystal. "Reading Hamlet." Hamlet: with Contemporary Essays. By William Shakespeare. Ed. Joseph Pearce. San Francisco: Ignatius, 2008. 185-98. Print.

In this article Crystal Downing gave the reader a clearer and deeper feeling of what really went on in Hamlet. She analyzed specific wordings, and took the explanation further than you could have ever read in the play, Downing explains to you in plain, clear English what it was that Shakespeare really meant. She emphasis how the entire play was a "tragedy of a man who couldn't make up his mind" and she goes into detail of how  indecisive he was. Her essay was a thorough analysis of the play and helped readers with questions that they could have had.

I would recommend this article for readers who are unsure about the plot and overall meaning of the play . Downing's article clarifies words, symbols, motifs and underlying messages that weren't clear to begin with. Her essay is something that I would recommend for people reading Hamlet as a side-by-side, it will help you understand the language and what exactly Shakespeare wants you to know and understand when reading the play.
